Not old enough! They're actaul1y teletype terms and codes!

The reason that ^D terminates a shell is that ^D is ASCII 4 which is "End of transmission", and ^G rang the bell sound on the teletype. Everything from ASCII (0) to ASCII (31) was used to control the movement and communication of the teletype.

Good Times.
