Thanks for that PR.  I'm just another user who got hit by endless
"MYSQL_OPT_RECONNECT" warnings, so it would be good to see progress here.

I did notice that upstream has 5.003 by now. Is this relevant enough to re-do
this patch, or is 5.002 "good enough" as a version bump?
