I wasn't able to reproduce the symptom using FreeBSD 13.1 (aarch64) in a
virtual machine, so either it's a bug from an older version that's been fixed
and Apple is using an obsolete fork, or it's a bug that Apple has introduced in
their fork.

(Apologies for not checking this sooner; at the time I wrote the initial report
I didn't have access to a recent FreeBSD install and naively assumed that
Apple's diff was based on shipping FreeBSD.)
