Because https:// only adds work.  And work is heat.

bsdinstall uses the MANIFEST to confirm integrity.

If your bsdinstall and MANIFEST are from a trustworthy source, anything 
downloaded over http:// will be trustworthy.  Just as trustworthy, in 
fact, as anything downloaded over ftp://.
